1. Bring a current event article to class and be prepared to discuss it, using these questions:
Why is the event important?
What are the long term consequences or options regarding this information?
What does this mean in terms of students' lives?
How can you connect our current event to your own life?
2. Read Chapter 8.
3. Check out this program, Citizenship Counts. It was founded by Gerda Weissmann Klein, from the documentary One Survivor Remembers. Think about how you could use this as a resource in your classroom... http://citizenshipcounts.org/
4. Chapter 8 has to do with Civic Education, which many people connect to citizenship. You may have born in the United States, which makes you an automatic citizen. What about those who want to become a U.S. citizen? In order to become a U.S. citizen, immigrants must pass the Naturalization Test. American citizenship bestows the right to vote, improves the likelihood of family members living in other countries to come and live in the US, gives eligibility for federal jobs, and can be a way to demonstrate loyalty to the US. Applicants must get 6 answers out of 10 in an oral exam to pass the test. According to US Citizenship and Immigration services, 92 percent of applicants pass this test.
How would you do? Let's find out! Go to the link below, read/follow the directions on the practice test, and complete it.
6. Now participate in the Discussion Area at the bottom of the page by answering these questions (This will be done as a whole class. I welcome you to read the posts of the others) THIS IS DUE BY 3:00 p.m. on Monday, April 22:
How could you use Citizenship Counts in your classroom?
So how did you do on the practice citizenship test?
Did your results surprise you?
What were your thoughts/feelings about the student-made YouTube video?
What is the name of Sponge Bob's best friend? If you were able to answer that and not some of the important questions on the citizenship test, what does that tell you?
